Making an income with a blog is very possible. Some bloggers are making thousands of dollars annually from their blogs, but most make an average of 1K to 10K. So these numbers alone have many curious about starting a blog to make money but many of us are left without the proper knowledge. In this post, we will walk through the proper steps to help you do exactly that.

Starting a blog

Making money with a blog can be accomplished in as little as 6 simple steps. These steps consist of the following:

  • Choose your niche/blog name
  • Get your blog online
  • Design your blog
  • Write your content
  • Create your plan
  • Create a schedule

Choosing your Niche/Blog name

The first and most important step with any blog has to be choosing your niche. It is also one of the hardest steps when starting a blog.

You are excited about starting your blog but now what do you want to write about? So,

What is a Niche?

The niche is the general topic or idea that you will be focusing your sites content on. This can be from anything as broad as travel to something as narrow as Marvel Avengers iPhone Cases.

You are going to have so many ideas floating around in your head that you will probably get discouraged. Don’t! Believe me it happens to the best of us.

I am not some blog expert, nor will I ever claim to be. No, I didn’t major in English in college. This is just something every blogger can relate to.

That is why the most important advice I can give you that was given to me is this – when choosing your niche it is best to first ask yourself these questions.

Next, you will want to choose your blog or domain name

Your blog name is important because it is what your bloggers will see and remember. One of the biggest mistakes newbie bloggers make is picking and registering a blog name too quick.

Sometimes you may choose a name that is too narrow for your niche and later down the line when your blog grows it no longer serves the purpose of your blog. Or other times you can pick a name that is too long or hard to remember.

Either way, what you schoose as your blog name must be taken in to careful consideration so here are a few steps to help you pick the perfect name.

  1. Don’t rush
  2. Go for short but catchy
  3. Don’t choose too broad or too narrow of a name
  4. Don’t use your own name
  5. Don’t use numbers
  6. Stay away from brand names and trademarks
  7. Try a blog name generator
  8. Ask others for help

Get your blog online

Man, Reading, Touchscreen, Blog, Digital

The next step will be in regard to the production of your blog. Now that you have decided on what your bog name and content will be you have to think about what it takes to actually get your blog up and running.

This will mean you will be deciding which blogging platform and hosting plan is right for you. For example, a self-hosted blog platform like WordPress is a good option since you don’t need to go by the rules of anyone with regards to your blog and it is hosted by Bluehost.

Tip: Be sure to read the conditions of service and fine print of the platform/hosting you choose to utilize. It’s an excellent idea if you’re going to need to make content about whatever.

Design your blog

Now that you have the most important steps put out of the way you can work on the design of your blog. Designing your blog is where you will have the most freedom and it is where you can enjoy the process.

Of course, if you have no experience with wesite design you may get a bit frustrated but that is the beauty of WordPress. It comes with 1,000s of templates all ready for you.

You don’t need to know HTML to design your own blog with WordPress.

When I first started blogging, I didn’t know much about all the technical stuff. I am not someone who majored in english and I don’t have any curses that can teach you all there is about blogging.

I was just a mother with a disability and determination. So I found a course that let me learn the ends and out of blogging so I could earn an income from home and still be a stay at home mom.

Write Your Content

Now that you have the basis of your website down, it is time to get into the nitty-gritty – your site content.

Let’s just think about this for a moment, why do people visit websites? To look at the pretty pictures, or to view the content? More than likely for the content, right?

So besides the first step of starting your blog, this has to be one of the most important if not the most important steps of your entire blog. If you don’t have content and not just any content but the quality that readers actually care about, then what do you actually have?

So when you are laying out your content you need to ask yourself some questions;

  • Who is your target for this post?
  • What is the topic and how can you add value to it?
  • What is the goal of your post?
  • Which of your products or services are you promoting in the post?
  • What action do you want your readers to take after reading your post?

Now that you can answers the questions to refins a post you next want to use the following criteria in your posts.

  • Compelling Headlines
  • Clear Introductions
  • Short Paragraphs
  • Written in Plain English
  • Use Your Voice
  • Use the Proper Length
  • Use Compelling Imagery
  • Have a Conclusion

Use these questions and criteria to refine a post that will provide value for your audience to be able to reach them.

When you’ve built an audience, then they will begin to let you know precisely what they need so as you grow, so choosing the products and services will become easier.

Many individuals approach business building backward. That would mean first choosing the audience, finding out what their pain points or issues are, and then putting together solutions in front of them.

This is always likely to be a much more simple way to profit than creating a product yourself and then attempting to find the audience. Once you know your topic, niche, and audience, you can start creating consistent content that gives value to the audience.

If you concentrate on this value you can provide over everything you are selling, sales will almost be automatic – so long as you’re still remembering to make a call to action and offer products that provide solutions.

Once you have created enough quality content you can focus on monetizing your blog and earning an income. It is ideally not a good idea to not start worrying about monetizing your site until you get enough traffic (at least 100 visitors per day) since you won’t make money until you get traffic anyways.

So first focus, on making quality content.

Create a Marketing Plan

Interaction, Social Media, Abstract

One of the most important ways to ensure the success of our blog is through your promotion tactics. If you truly want to have a successful blog you need to promote your content extensively.

Here are the top ways to market your blog:

  • Social Medial
  • Guest blogging
  • Forums and Messageboards
  • Using an email newsletter
  • Expert Interviews
  • Networking with other bloggers

For a blogger, there are many different ways you can promote your content but in this day and age, social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Linkedin, Snapchat, and more are the obvious first choice. Why, because it is where most people spend there time and you can use plugins and more to conveniently share your post.

However, since there are so many different sites it would take you too much time to share at all of them and it would probably be unwise to share at ones that were not relevant to your niche.

If you concentrate on this value you can provide over everything you are selling, sales will almost be automatic – so long as you’re still remembering to make a call to action and offer products that provide solutions.

Based on your product, services, and niche, you’ll have different marketing options. You will need to use a multichannel marketing approach. Some free marketing, some paid marketing, little influencers, and so forth, will go further than relying upon only one marketing method.

As you build your audience, you will have to start picking to be seen and heard and not just stay behind a computer if you wish to grow more. Today, live events, webinars, in-person seminars, and more are all key ways to raise an authority, build a community, and find more ideas for services and products to promote to your audience.

Create a posting schedule

Consistency is an important trade to have in a blogging business. Blogging consistently is important for a few reasons;

  • It shows dedication
  • It improves visibility with Google
  • It sets expectancy with your readers
  • It helps keep you committed and focused
